WHAT IS INTEGRATIVE PSYCHIATRY?

Integrative psychiatry is an approach to mental health that puts the spotlight on the individual affected by the illness, rather than just on the disorder.  It differs from traditional psychiatry in that the goal of care goes beyond the absence of symptoms and strives to address the root causes of the disorder in order to heal fully.

Whereas conventional medicine classifies the human body into separate organ-systems, integrative medicine views the mind and body as being intricately connected and aims to treat the whole unique person.

Conventional medicine typically treats symptoms by introducing opposing mechanisms from an external source such as medications.  On the other hand, natural or alternative therapies generally promote the body's own innate healing ability to combat the symptoms.  Integrative psychiatry combines both modalities to achieve and maintain optimal mental health.
